INTRODUCTION
This project showcases Bedrock Design and Craft, LLC attention to detail, the beauty of red oak, and the joy of designing a product for an audience that sees the world very differently than we do as adults.  The objective was to present the covers of children’s books to a young man so he could see the pictures, choose a book, and then have his parents read him to sleep.

PROJECT SCOPE
Complete set of top-level assembly and detail drawings to obtain client approval and guide construction.
The entire piece was fabricated from one length of red oak.  Ony the backing sheets were made from plywood.
The size and proportions of the rack had to suit a toddler’s needs for several years.

DESIGN PROCESS
The design required rotating the orientation of books from a normal bookshelf to a magazine rack style.
Three levels of storage are available to show the entire child’s library.
The shelves were slotted into the sides of the solid sides to provide more gluing surface and increase the strength and rigidity of the whole piece.
FABRICATION AND DELIVERY
Bedrock fabricated all of the parts and assembled them at former Techshop site in Pittsburgh, PA.  The magazine rack was delivered to Johnstown, PA and provided a learning platform for two children.
